Hair Products I'm Loving Lately + Tips
I’ll be honest with you guys, when I had long hair, it was a good day if I brushed it. Once my hair gets past my shoulders, it gets wavy - so brushing it causes frizz like you wouldn’t believe. With shorter hair, I didn’t want to continue that trend of doing the least, so I turned to hair products. But enough about me! I want to share some products with you guys that I’ve been loving lately, along with a few tips. Keep in mind, what works for me, might not work for you, but to get a better idea… I have fine hair, but a lot of it and I tend to get dryer ends but greasy on the scalp by the second day, currently my hair is not color treated.
Shampoo and Conditioner
For quite a few years now, I’ve switched back and forth between high end and drugstore shampoos and conditioners. No matter where I purchase my hair care, I make sure it is cruelty and sulfate free. Currently, I’m really loving OGX’s Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Shampoo and Conditioner. The smell is so warm yet so refreshing, and oh my, THE SHINE it leaves is incredible. I don’t mean a shine like, greasy two day hair, I mean a healthy shine. Another thing I love about this set, is that it doesn’t leave my hair feeling weighed down! I’ve been getting a lot of questions lately about my hair and comments like, “Your hair looks so healthy!” Well babes, the tea has been spilt.
Hair Treatments
Technically Joico K-PAK is just a conditioner, but since its a bit heavier and has keratin in it, I only use it as a treatment if my hair is feeling extra dry. Keratin is something you don’t want to use every day because it is a protein. Think of it this way, you don’t want to eat protein bars for every meal, because after a while you might put on some unwanted pounds. The same goes for keratin usage, too much of it can make the hair stiff and brittle, actually causing unwanted damage in the long run. Everything in moderation my friends. Speaking of breakage, please don’t brush your wet hair! UNLESS, you’re using a wide tooth comb. I swear by the purple brush photographed above, I use it after every shower, after I’ve put product into my hair and voilà. I wish I could remember where I bought it from, but honestly I have no clue, so here is something I found that is similar by Conair.
Post-Shower + Styling Products
I want to preface this list with a styling tip that I actually just learned recently! I went and had my hair cut + styled at The Beauty Bar in Turlock, by Ramona who shared this trick with me. She told me to, “Think of hair like dough…” she went on to explain that we mix ingredients into the dough while it is still wet so it absorbs properly. Well, hair is the same way. It is best to apply your products while your hair is still wet - i.e. heat protectant.
First up on this list is the Verb Ghost Oil. Putting this product in your hair post-shower is like signing your name onto a contract that guarantees a good hair day. It busts out frizz like you wouldn’t believe, it makes your hair extremely soft, and it triples as a heat protectant. Second, is a product I bought right before going to Hawaii this summer, since I knew the sun and salt would cause some damage to my tresses. I had to get the travel size since I would be getting on a plane, so here it is, the Macadamia Nourishing Moisture Oil Treatment. I can’t even explain what this smells like, and maybe it’s because it reminds me so much of Hawaii (since I used it practically everyday there), but it is hands down one of my favorite scents. I strictly use this product on my ends because it is definitely a heavier oil, therefore unless you have really dry hair, I wouldn’t get it anywhere past your mid-length. One of the last two products is not even a product, it’s actually an accessory. This is actually my favorite hair tie - the Invisibobble Traceless Hair Ring. I love this so much because I work with my hair up. When your hair is tied up for a prolonged amount of time, it increases the chance of breakage. Since the Invisibobble works to not leave kinks in the hair like other ties, it doesn’t cause friction on the strands - hence the reduced chance of breakage.
I saved the OUAI Wave Spray for last, because not only did I buy this for Hawaii, but I still use it almost every day. My usage of this is entirely dependent on the day, but most of the time I spritz it into my hair before waving it with my straightener, as it helps to hold the curl better. Other days if I’m craving a more of a tousled look, I sptriz this in my hair after I've waved it and used hair spray - almost like a texturizing mist. Hands down, I would have to say that my favorite thing about this product is it’s lack of sodium. Many wave sprays use sodium in order to replicate the beach waves many of us desire, but as mentioned in the last paragraph, salt can be harmful to the hair as it dries it out. Instead, OUAI uses “rice protein” to perfectly replicate the classic beach wave without ever drying the hair.
